Oil shale

A maximum of 20 million tons of oil shale can be extracted in one year. The issuer of extraction permits, the Environmental Board, maintains records about the annual rate of extraction of oil shale, which failed to be extracted, and publishes on 1 August each year on its website the quantities of oil shale, which failed to be extracted of the annual extraction rate during the past six calendar years, and the quantity of oil shale which failed to be extracted of the annual rate of extraction of oil shale which retroactive extraction is permitted in the following calendar year

The annual oil shale extraction rate is the maximum amount of oil shale that can be extracted on the basis of all oil shale extraction permits. The annual rate of extraction of oil shale is permitted to be exceeded to the extent and pursuant to the procedure provided for in §63 of the Earth’s Crust Act.

Pursuant to §63 (1) of the Earth’s Crust Act, it is permitted to extract the quantity of oil shale which failed to be extracted of the annual rate of extraction of oil shale retroactively within seven years following the year when the quantity failed to be extracted.

The Environmental Board notes that as of 1 August 2019, the total amount of oil shale, which failed to be extracted of the annual rate of extraction in the previous six calendar years is 30,836.5 thousand tons.
